When it comes to interior lighting, bathrooms probably get the least consideration of all the rooms in the home. But as bathrooms increasingly become a place to relax and unwind, the lighting requires extra thought.

Vanity Lighting should get special consideration because these fixtures work hardest to illuminate the head and face for grooming, which has a dramatic effect on how you see yourself. Sconces, typically on each side of the mirror are best for casting an even light across the face. A row of vanity lights across the top of the mirror can be used with wall sconces to provide good, even lighting and give your bathroom vanity a coordinated look.

The shower is the secondary area of task lighting to be considered. In these areas, recessed lights work well for providing strong, bright light. It is imperative to use only fixtures rated for wet locations to light showers and bathtubs.

Additional lighting can really help your bathroom look more spacious. A ceiling fixture is a good idea for general lighting while a counter or tabletop lamp is helpful for adding a nice, warm glow.

Attention to the aesthetics in the bathroom doesn't lessen the importance of safety. Electricity and water are still a dangerous combination and nowhere do they come together more than in the bathroom. Always consult a certified electrician before attempting even the simplest lighting project.

Remember, to add some extra thought into your bathroom lighting. When it's done properly, the payoff is worth it. After all, this is where you start and end your day.
